What Is Self-Certification?
Self-certification allows eligible adults to certify that they will use medical cannabis for a qualifying medical purpose without obtaining a recommendation from a healthcare provider.
If you are 21 years of age or older, you can simply select the "Self-Certification" option when completing your online application. This has made medical cannabis significantly more accessible while still maintaining a secure registration system through the DC Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration (ABCA).
Applicants who are 18 to 20 years old are not eligible for self-certification and must include a healthcare provider recommendation with their application. Patients under 18 must also have a healthcare recommendation and register through a parent or legal guardian, who must also be listed as the patient's caregiver.

When completing your application, adults age 21 and older can simply choose the self-certification option instead of entering a healthcare provider recommendation.
Online applications are strongly encouraged because they are processed faster than paper applications. Once your application is submitted, you'll typically receive a temporary digital registration by email that allows you to purchase medical cannabis immediately while your application is being reviewed.
If your application is approved, you'll receive your permanent digital registration electronically.
How Non-DC Residents Can Register
Visitors and residents from other states can also legally purchase medical cannabis in Washington, DC through the temporary patient registration program.

Temporary registrations are now valid for 90 days, making it easier than ever for visitors who spend extended time in DC for work, school, or travel.
Like DC residents, adults 21 and older can use the self-certification option during the application process.
Registration Length and Renewal
Medical cannabis patient registrations are now issued for two years for new applicants. If you previously received a registration with a longer validity period, your existing card remains valid until its listed expiration date.
When it's time to renew, the process is simple and follows many of the same steps as your original application.

What Happens After You Apply?
One of the biggest benefits of applying online is that you don't have to wait weeks before visiting a dispensary.
After submitting your online application, you'll receive a temporary digital registration by email that can be used immediately while your application is under review. This temporary registration is valid for up to 90 days.
Once approved, you'll receive your permanent digital registration electronically.
Both digital registrations and physical cards are accepted at licensed DC medical cannabis dispensaries.
Do You Need a Physical Card?
Most patients simply use the digital version of their registration on their phone.
However, if you prefer a physical card, you can request one for a $10 fee. After your request is processed, you'll receive a payment link, and your card will be mailed to the address on your application.
It's also worth noting that newly issued registrations no longer require a face photo, making the application process even simpler.
